What appeared to be skeletal human remains were found during a basement excavation in Lake Grove this Halloween.

Police say a family was excavating their basement in their Olive Street home when they discovered the apparent remains.

Police say the family has owned the house since 1957, and the father has been missing since 1961. News 12 is told that the mother died and four siblings own the house.

Suffolk police launched an investigation by air and on the ground. Some detectives were seen coming out of the backyard; others interviewed neighbors. A mobile crime scene lab and command post were stationed near the house.

The investigation was expected to continue through the night.
