Members of high school marching bands across Long Island are upset over the cancelation once again of the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival due to the pandemic.
The Central Islip High School marching band joined with other bands to start an online petition, which has already received more than 3,000 signatures in hopes of getting the cancelation reversed.
"I never expected so many people to sign and so many people actually cared about this," says Kae Mon Van, of Central Islip High School. "We are working on our show. Working hard for this for Hofstra and then we hear it gets canceled, we're all just devastated."
Julia Mescallavo, of Northport High School, says they are all disappointed because they are working so hard.
Newsday released a statement saying in part, "The Newsday Marching Band Festival has been postponed and will not take place this October. This was not a decision that was made lightly. We are now in the midst of speaking with all participating schools and looking to possibly hold a music festival sometime in the spring."
