A teacher from Herricks High School has been reassigned after she was charged for allegedly giving a student a COVID-19 vaccine without parental permission.
Nassau police say Laura Russo, 54, injected what appears to be a COVID-19 vaccine into the arm of the 17-year-old student at her home in Sea Cliff on New Year's Eve.
The student reportedly went home and told his mother, who then called police.
The district issued a statement saying that "the individual in question is a district employee who has been removed from the classroom and reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation. The alleged incident is non-school related. As this is a matter of personnel, the district has no further comment."
Russo was given a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 21.
News 12 tried knocking on Russo's door for comment, but there was no answer.
