Officials say a 95-year-old man was killed as a fast-moving fire consumed his home in Albertson.
The fire broke out just before 11 a.m. on Park Lane Drive.
Hospital officials tell News 12 that the homeowner, Henry Golis, 95, was taken to North Shore LIJ in Manhasset, where he was pronounced dead. His wife Eleanor was taken to the NUMC burn unit. She is listed in critical condition.
News 12 was told a teacher at Searingtown Elemetary, which is next door to the home, reported the fire after seeing smoke.
Officials say the inside of the home was cluttered, which made it difficult for crews to search.
Police officers Scott Thiel and James Duignan were the first on the scene. They managed to remove the couple from the home and lay them on their front lawn until ambulances arrived.
Fire officials say the couple's son also lives in the home. He was not inside at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
