Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray announced a petition drive Wednesday in Floral Park to stop a planned Long Island Rail Road expansion. The LIRR wants to expand its main line from two tracks to three between New York City and Hicksville. The Long Island Association says the expansion is necessary for the growth of Long Island. Still, many residents are trying to halt the plans out of fears they will lose their properties in the process. Murray made the petition announcement along with several residents critical of the plan. ?Literally 80 properties alone in New Hyde Park would have to be taken,? said Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray. Floral Park Mayor Phil Guarnieri says ?the third track expansion will devastate communities along its path.? Murray, Guarnieri and others are challenging the MTA to find alternate methods of increasing passenger capacity without destroying property. The public can send comments on the project to the MTA until December 31 before a decision is made.
