A number of parents pulled their children from the Village of Hempstead's summer camp after learning that one of the counselors had a troublesome record.
Carlean Samona McCrimmon was arrested in Georgia back in 2011 and charged with cruelty to children, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disorderly conduct.
Village officials told News 12 that they do not conduct criminal background checks on camp counselors. They say they do check the state sex offender registry.
Parks supervisor George Sandas says McCrimmon was fired two weeks ago.
News 12 asked the Hempstead Village Mayor's Office about the lack of background checks on camp counselors and if it plans on changing the policy in the future. The office refused to comment.
Camp officials say McCrimmon has been a counselor at Kennedy Memorial Park for the past five summers. Efforts to reach her for comment were not successful.
