Hector Hernandez, 26, accused of running dog fighting ring out of home in West Hempstead


A West Hempstead man is accused of running a dog fighting ring on Long Island.

Hector Hernandez, 26, was arraigned and charged with nine counts of prohibition of animal fighting.

Officials say the ring was located at the suspect's home on Pinebrook Avenue.

Eight dogs were seized from the home and are being treated at the Hempstead Animal Shelter.

If convicted as charged, Hernandez could face up to one year in prison, plus $15,000 per dog in fines.

Hernandez is due back in court on Jan. 22.
