A Hauppauge teen accused of killing his stepfather with a sword threw the courtroom a curveball when he took the stand in his own defense Thursday.
Nineteen-year-old Zachary Gibian told the jury he fabricated his February 2005 confession to protect his mother. Gibian also claimed slain stepfather Scott Nager sexually abused him by gunpoint for more than 2 years before his mom committed the murder. Defense attorney Bill Keahon, who believes the wrong person is on trial, says Gibian's mom has refused a subpoena to testify and has invoked the 5th Amendment.
The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office says Gibian lied on the stand. They say the teen never mentioned this version of events at any time since his arrest.
