An 8-year-old Oceanside boy and his family are giving back to the Nassau hospital that provided life-saving care at a crucial moment.

Sean Hatzfield had a near-fatal bout last February with sepsis shock, a severe inflammatory infection. A doctor originally told his family that he merely had a cold, but he contracted a bacterial infection and the infection reached his bloodstream.

The boy was taken to Winthrop University Hospital, where a surgeon's care helped him recover. He had to take blood tests every day for a while, but now he is feeling much better.

Today, Sean and his family presented a check for $25,000 to Winthrop in appreciation. The money was raised through a golf outing that Sean's family organized. A total of 86 people signed up to play at the Glen Gove Golf Club to give back to the hospital and to raise awareness about the illness.
