At the height of Hanna?s fury, wind sent waves crashing over docks in Blue Point, caused floods in the streets of Huntington and closed South Shore beaches.
Hanna hammered Long Island with an average of three inches of rain, which caused parts of New York Avenue in Huntington to shutdown.
On the South Shore, strong rip currents prompted park officials Sunday to ban swimming at Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Hither Hills in Montauk. Fortunately, the rough tides didn?t erode the beaches, park officials say.
While Hanna knocked down trees and power lines, LIPA?s president Kevin Law says only 33,000 customers lost power. By Sunday morning, all but 1,000 were restored.
?It was certainly a bad storm in terms of wind and rain, but not as bad as we thought it was going to be,? says Law.
