Democrat Adam Haber, of East Hills, is hoping his stance on abortion will catapult him to victory in New York's 7th Senate district.
Haber is trying to unseat two-term Republican incumbent Jack Martins, who was leading the challenger by 25 percentage points in a News 12/Newsday/Siena College poll last month.
Haber's campaign has shifted to target women's votes by bringing his pro-choice stance into the forefront.
"Let's be clear, unlike Jack Martins, I'm pro-choice, and will stand up to the extremists who are blocking the Women's Equality Act from becoming law," Haber says in a recent ad.
In response, Martins released a campaign ad of his own that included his wife and four daughters. He says he's had success in the district because he's not an extremist on women's issues, or anything else.
"I also have the distinction of having been protested by the tea party in front of my house, and the Working Families Party in front of my district office. That speaks volumes to the fact that I work in the middle. I'm a moderate," said Martins.
The Haber/Martins race was initially seen as one of the most competitive in the state, and because Adam Haber has millions of dollars to spend, it still has a chance to be a close one.
