The Great Neck plastic surgeon accused of stockpiling weapons and threatening his estranged wife declined to testify today before a grand jury.
Dr. Matthew Bonanno, 47, was arrested and held on a $100,000 bond after he was allegedly overheard threatening to kill his estranged wife and her family. Once police were alerted, Bonanno was arrested outside a bar. They then found his car, which they say contained an arsenal of weapons, ammunition and body armor, parked outside his estranged wife's home. Police also searched two other homes he owns in Mount Pleasant and Great Neck. Investigators say they found more weapons in both of the houses.
Bonanno's lawyer says his client didn't want to speak because prosecutors wouldn't call his estranged wife to the stand. They say she would have testified that Bonanno poses no threat.
Prosecutors also say the New York State Department of Health is now reviewing Bonanno’s medical license.
