Great Neck doctor facing dozens of weapon possession charges appears in court

A Great Neck plastic surgeon accused of threatening to kill his estranged wife appeared in Tuckahoe Village court Tuesday.
Dr. Matthew Bonanno, 47-year-old, was arrested last week after he was allegedly overheard threatening to kill his estranged wife and her families.
Once police were alerted, Bonanno was arrested outside a bar. They then found his car, which contained an arsenal of weapons, ammunition and body armor, parked outside his estranged wife's home.
Police then searched two other homes he owns in Mount Pleasant and Long Island. They found even more weapons in both of the houses.
An investigation into how Bonanno acquired so many illegal weapons is ongoing.
Bonanno's lawyer says his client should be released from jail.
"Neither the wife nor the family have brought any charges and they don't want to bring charges," his lawyer said. "Instead we have this dog and pony show for small town people trying to pretend they have a big time case."
He says Bonanno is a "gun enthusiast," but not a threat.
Police say there was an order of protection against the plastic surgeon that had expired, but there was no history of violence between him and his wife.
Bonnano has been held without bail at the Westchester County Jail since his arrest.
He is expected to testify before a grand jury on Friday.
