A plan by Gov. Andrew Cuomo could improve commutes for some Long Islanders, but not everyone is on board.

Cuomo is a strong proponent of a cross-sound tunnel to points north of Long Island, and his administration tells News 12 that a feasibility study for that type of project is now underway.

Last month, the governor touted the idea even days after the Federal Railroad Administration withheld funds from a similar cross-sound bridge proposal.

In the past there have been proposals to extend the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway north through residential communities like Syosset and Oyster Bay, ultimately connecting to a bridge or a tunnel on the Sound.

However, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joe Saladino says there is a better approach.

"The right place for this type of tunnel is at the northern end of the Sagtikos Parkway," he says. "It's all state land and it runs into state land. The town of Oyster Bay is absolutely the wrong place for this type of construction."

Democrat Marc Herman, who is challenging Saladino in the Oyster Bay Town Supervisor race, says while he agrees with many of Cuomo's infrastructure projects, the cross-sound tunnel is not one of them.

Herman says it would only make traffic in the town worse.
