The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Wednesday that the computers that will run Google's driverless cars can be considered drivers, just like humans.
Google describes the self-driving car on its website as one that "relies on their sensors and software to drive themselves."
A Google spokesperson said the company had no comment on the announcement.
While some automakers say driverless cars could be put in use in limited areas by 2020, Google says it plans to set an earlier target date.
