Residents say they are concerned about a new plan to redevelop the Glen Cove waterfront.

The proposal redeveloping Garvies Point into a waterfront destination would include 1,100 housing units and a 12-story tall building. Residents say a building of that height will ruin their view of the harbor, create light pollution, increase traffic and could even pose health risks.

The planned location is a former Superfund site, an area that was previously contaminated with hazardous substances. Because of that, the Village of Sea Cliff has filed a lawsuit against the City of Glen Cove.

Eileen Coles, of Glen Cove, is circulating a petition online to stop the development of the area, which she believes could be dangerous.

"We've got all these superstorms hitting and to me, to build a building like that right on the water is a recipe for disaster," says Coles.

However, Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello says the project will continue, bringing hundreds of full-time jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue for the city.

"This will completely turn Glen Cove around," says Spinello. "We'll be attracting empty nesters, young professionals and we'll have a market that Glen Cove never had before."
