Glen Cove Hospital's centennial milestone of serving the North Shore community means a lot to one family in the area.

Dr. John Sheehy, a pediatrician at the hospital, was born there in 1949. He was the second of 10 siblings born in the community hospital.

Dr. John Sheehy's father, Thomas, and mother, Adelaide, also worked as doctors at Glen Cove Hospital for over 40 years.

The hospital became like a second home for John Sheehy when he was a child.

"We'd sit in the ... main lobby - Mom would go over, turn her light on, clip clop away in her high heels and go make her rounds and pick us up," John Sheehy says.

He says his parents' work inspired him to study medicine and he joined the staff as a pediatrician in 1978.

John Sheehy's sister, Eileen, would also become a pediatrician there four years later.

"It was family-oriented and a good community," John Sheehy says.

The hospital was originally named Glen Cove Community Hospital when it opened in 1922 as the city's first health care facility.

Over the 100 years it has been around, the hospital has gained a reputation as the facility to go to for acute rehabilitation programs, head and neck surgery and women's surgical care.

"They come here because they want the personalized care that they can receive at Glen Cove Hospital," says Glen Cove Hospital Executive Director Kerri Scanlon.

Dr. John Sheehy has been at Glen Cove Hospital for 45 years and says some of his memorable moments include tending to victims of the Avianca plane crash in Cove Neck in 1990.

He says every day at the hospital has been a gift.

"I've had a lot of good years here - hopefully, a few more years as I slow down," John Sheehy says. "But I've enjoyed it - I've enjoyed the run."
