Ida’s impact is now being felt by students in Glen Cove, where the high school sustained major damage.
The middle school opening was delayed to Friday, but the high school opening is set back another week due to Ida’s destruction.
In statement to News 12, Glen Cove School District said in part, “Glen Cove High School experienced extensive damage from Wednesday night's storm and will be closed for repairs until the conditions are safe for students to return to the building. Our Director of Facilities and the entire custodial and maintenance crew are working tirelessly to ensure the school is back up and running by next week. As we previously communicated to our high school students and their families, we are looking forward to welcoming our high school students back on Thursday, September 9th."
Students are required to be in class a certain number of days during the school year. Now parents like Gloria Mendez are concerned how these days will be made up.
Mendez said she hopes the days will not be made up during the holiday season or any other special days.
The school did not confirm what exact damages occurred, but parents say it is due to flooding and a downed tree.
There is no word yet on how students will handle making up the missed days.
