Westchester County will soon have a new leader. George Latimer will be giving his farewell address next week before taking over a seat in Congress.

Latimer has a lot of memories in his office inside the Westchester County Office Building in White Plains.

"Soon enough, I'm going to drive by and think I used to be up there," says Rep.-elect George Latimer.

It's where he has been serving as Westchester County executive.

But now, he's clearing out his desk and changing the title mounted on his wall for what he calls, "the major leagues."

"I get the opportunity before my overall career ends to at least experience what that's like at the federal level," says Latimer.

Latimer will be sworn in as congressman for New York's 16th District. It follows an already lengthy career in public service, from Rye City Council to county legislator and state senator.

Throughout his time as county executive, he says he faced challenges. The pandemic was a big one.

He also experienced some very gratifying moments.

"On a personal level, the renovation at Memorial Field in Mount Vernon," says Latimer.

Latimer tells News 12 he has a lot to get done before taking over his seat in Washington, D.C.

A part of that is getting used to a new routine.

"I would be home here in the district Friday, Saturday, Sunday and part of Monday," Latimer explains.

Latimer's farewell address is scheduled for Dec. 30.

"I've had a great opportunity to serve but it's regulated by time. It's not yours for life, it's yours for a period of time and I'm okay with that," says Latimer.
