The average price of gas on Long Island was 25 cents higher Monday than it was one month earlier.
A gallon of unleaded gas costs an average of $3.26, up from $3.01 on April 21.
Motorists searched for someone to blame. While many pointed their fingers at big oil companies, Bill Martakis, the owner of Bill's Friendly Auto Service in Roslyn, provided another answer.
"The fellows who are making some of the most money are the traders on Wall Street who set the price," Martakis said. "Understand that the price is not set by the oil companies. The price is set by the New York Mercantile Exchange."
Government leaders are also searching for answers. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has called for an investigation into price gauging, while Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) has pushed for a probe into big oil.
