One of Long Island?s most well-known and respected high school coaches was caught on tape stealing a license plate in Freeport last week.
Garden City High School lacrosse coach William ?Doc? Dougherty was recorded by a surveillance camera removing the license plate of a neighbor?s car. The neighbor, Freeport teacher William Wall, says Dougherty has been causing problems for years. Wall also accuses Dougherty of throwing his bicycle in a canal, putting cinder blocks in front of his boat, leaving garbage on his lawn and throwing leaves in front of his house.
Freeport police confirm Dougherty was arrested on June 7 for stealing the license plate. News 12 Long Island tried to reach Dougherty for comment, but phone calls went unreturned.
Neighbors say the feud between the two educators has been going on for years, with each constantly antagonizing the other. Many say the two are setting a bad example for their students and hope they can show some sportsmanship by working out their differences.
