The Village of Garden City has approved a settlement, paving the way for the end of its paid fire department.
Garden City's mayor confirms that the village board last night approved a $1.4 million settlement with the paid firefighters and union that eliminates all paid firefighters.
In July, the board members agreed to replace the paid fire department with volunteers. The move is expected to save Garden City about $2 million a year.
