Two people were arrested and one person was hospitalized after gang tensions boiled over onto the streets of Brentwood in broad daylight Thursday, Suffolk police said.
Investigators said at least 12 members of two rival gangs violently attacked each other just before 1 p.m. on Stein Drive, next to Brentwood High School. Police said four cars purposely collided before one suspected gang member got out and stabbed another in the arm with a machete. Police said a friend of the stab victim then took out a shotgun. Witnesses described hearing at least two shots, which police said were blocked by a parked SUV.
Relatives of the stab victim said he was brought to South Side Hospital and underwent surgery. His condition is unknown.
Police chased a car that fled the scene and arrested its driver, 20-year-old Mayra Velasquez of Brentwood. A male passenger escaped into the woods. Heriberto Medina, 17, of Brentwood, was also arrested for his alleged involvement in the incident. Both were charged with first-degree reckless endangerment.
Three schools, Brentwood High, South Middle and Oak Park Elementary, were put on lockdown for the remainder of the afternoon.
