The Gabby Petito case has sparked calls for more attention on other missing person cases, especially those involving people of color.
Equana Maddox, of Hempstead, says her brother Nathaniel Sample vanished on Sept. 26, 2019. Maddox says it's been a struggle to get help from the media and police to find him.
"I wish his face was plastered all over the news so he can be found also," says Maddox. "I feel like they are definitely being way more proactive with Gabby's case than Nate's case."
Petito's family agrees that all missing persons deserve the same attention. At a news conference Tuesday, the family announced they're launching the Gabby Petito Foundation to support people searching for missing loved ones.
"I think it can definitely provide social media attention," says Tiana Heath, of 'Missing on Long Island.'
Heath is the host and producer of 'Missing on Long Island,' which helps families of missing people by getting the word out about their cases via YouTube and Facebook.
Heath says the Gabby Petito Foundation will make a big difference by providing resources to organizations to help shine the spotlight on the plight of missing people on various social media platforms.
"I've seen at least thousands and thousands of views and shares just basically off of Facebook alone, and that heightens, okay, this person matters, this person has family, this person needs to be seen," says Heath.
