The sale of one of the last remaining open spaces in Freeport is being contested. Residents who live near the four-acre parcel of land off Brookside Avenue are fighting to save the property. They tell News 12 Long Island that they believe only the taxpaying citizens of Freeport should decide the fate of the area. Nassau County agreed to purchase the property for $6.2 million from its previous owner. In May, the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved the sale and agreed to use environmental bond money to buy the land and preserve it as open space. However, Freeport residents now fear that the Nassau Interim Finance Authority will cancel the sale. NIFA says the bond purchase will come before a board meeting tomorrow. Residents protesting the matter say they plan to attend the meeting.
