Freeport officials announced plans to transform the historic Freeport armory into a new trade school.
Officials say the trade school will create new opportunities in workforce development while preserving the landmark.
The Armory Complex already houses a nursery school and after-school sports programs.
But the space where the trade school will be is currently being occupied by the Merrick Fire Department.
Officials say the goal is to have it open in six to nine months.
"We're looking to bring in a vendor, something like BOCES or BOCES themselves to teach electric, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and IT for those students that don't want to go to college and want to get a trade," says Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy.
This is made possible in part by a $300,000 grant from Nassau County.
