A Freeport man accused of trying to sexually assault a woman in the village is free on bail Tuesday.
Police say Umari Taylor approached the victim from behind while she was walking on South Main Street around 11:30 a.m. on April 24.
According to police, Taylor demanded the 44-year-old remove her clothes. Then, police say the 20-year-old pressed a knife against her and exposed himself.
The woman screamed and Taylor ran off.
Police say they arrested Taylor on Tuesday. Taylor is a former football player at Holy Trinity High School and his sister is running for school board while his mother is the leader of the Freeport Republican Club and has a seat on the village planning board.
Taylor's next door neighbor Carlotta Woodson says she thinks the allegations are false and could be motivated by politics.
Taylor has been charged with attempted criminal sexual act. He was freed after posting $40,000 cash bail.
