Former President Bill Clinton campaigned for Democratic incumbent Rep. Tim Bishop at Stony Brook University Wednesday night.
Bishop is seeking a 7th term against Republican State Sen. Lee Zeldin.
Clinton said Bishop's experience and track record for getting things done make him the clear choice for the 1st Congressional District.
"He is a great congressman in the old fashioned sense of the word," said the former president. "He realizes every day, no matter what's being voted on in Congress, he can make something good happen for the people of this district."
The former president highlighted Bishop's accomplishments, including securing funds to save Brookhaven National Lab, making higher education affordable and protecting Long Island's environment.
The latest Newsday-News 12 Poll gave Bishop a 10-point lead over Zeldin.
The race has turned nasty in recent weeks with both sides flooding the district with negative ads.
The race is a rematch of 2008 when Bishop defeated Zeldin. The Bishop campaign is hoping Clinton's star power and continued popularity will sway undecided voters.
