The former NYPD officer who sold fentanyl that led to a fatal overdose on Long Island has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Joseph Recca pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges in connection to the 2019 overdose of Ryan Bornschein.
Recca, who is from West Islip, had been employed with the NYPD since 2017 and resigned following his arrest last July.
"He used resources that he was given as a police officer to further his drug conspiracy. This notion that he lost his way during certain hours of the day is not supported by the evidence in this case," says Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini.
Sini also called for the state to issue a death by dealer statute, saying they need to "send a message that when you sell drugs and you kill people, you are held responsible for that death."
