A Long Beach man pleaded guilty Friday to ambushing his former coworker with an axe last year, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
Anthony Calvo, 35, is expected to be sentenced to 22 years in prison for attempting to kill a 60‑year‑old former taxi company coworker after a disagreement.
On Feb. 13, 2025, Calvo saw the man walking home from an overnight shift on Arizona Avenue, where he worked as a taxi dispatcher for Long Beach Taxi. Calvo snuck up behind him and struck him with an axe at least three times in the face, head and arm, the DA’s office said.
The 60‑year‑old victim dragged himself to a family member’s home and banged on the door for help. A 911 call was made, and Calvo was arrested about a month later.
Donnelly said that a year after the attack, the victim cannot walk or bear weight and requires constant medical assistance. He has only recently begun communicating and relearning basic life skills, including feeding himself, she said.
