The first doses of the new one-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine have been given out on Long Island.

Among the facilities getting their first shots was South Shore University Hospital, which got 5,000 doses Wednesday morning. The vaccines were kept only for patients who were being discharged.

"I have compromised health and I haven't been out hardly ever, and this will afford me that opportunity, so I'm very thankful," says Susan Maxwell-Trumble, of Babylon.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is the third to be approved for emergency use by the FDA. It's also the only one that is a single dose.

Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip also got a shipment Wednesday, containing 1,000 doses. The hospital is offering the vaccine to eligible members of the community through a partnership with the Town of Islip.

A spokesman says, "People who are 65 years of age and older and qualify for groups 1a and 1b under New York state guidelines can schedule an appointment by calling 631-224-5380."

In all, five out of the six hospitals in the Catholic Health System got shipment of the J&J vaccine.

Good Samaritan Hospital officials say they will start using the doses Monday.
