An 18-year-old was sentenced Wednesday to four to 12 years in prison for a fatal drunk driving crash in East Hampton last year that killed a teen passenger.

Luis Gonzalo Barrionuevo Fuertes, of Moriches, previously pleaded guilty to several charges, including vehicular homicide, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.

On Father's Day 2025, Fuertes veered off Old Stone Highway after approaching a curve in the road, went the wrong-way and lost control, hitting a tree. He was going 74 mph in a 30-mph zone seconds before impact.

The life of East Hampton High School junior 19-year-old Scarleth Samaniego-Urgiles ended there. Another teen had a spinal fracture and severe lacerations that left her hand disfigured. In total, six teenagers ranging from 15 to 19 years old were in his backseat.

The group was reported to have been drinking Corona and Modelos at the beach prior to the incident. After police tested Fuertes, he had a BAC of .08.

As News 12 previously reported, during Fuertes arraignment it was revealed passengers told the 18-year-old to slow down.

“A young woman lost her life because of the selfish actions of the defendant," said Tierney, "I hope that this prison sentence brings some small degree of solace to the victim’s family who are undoubtedly still grieving this senseless loss.”
