A dozen fire departments battled a raging fire in Long Beach early Friday morning.
The fire broke out shortly after 1 a.m. at a home on East Beech Street.
City Manager Jack Schnirman says firefighters faced non-working fire hydrants. He says two of the closest hydrants had low pressure, and a third didn't work at all.
Schnirman says the hydrant problems stem from saltwater damage from Superstorm Sandy.
"Hydrants were frozen, and over time they receive salt water damage from Sandy and a little leakage in 8-degree weather," he says. "That leakage is going to freeze."
Officials say that while the fire spread to two neighboring homes, all of the families were able to get out safely.
The Nassau County Fire Marshall's office is investigating the blaze. At this point, they say the fire is not suspicous.
