A Lake Grove family is homeless after a fire tore through their Sandy Court home on one of the coldest nights of the year.
Fire officials say it appears an oil burner fire quickly spread to the attic and destroyed the roof. Two children and their grandparents got out of the home safely; their parents are away on vacation.
The Centereach fire chief says battling the fire Sunday night in the bone-chilling cold was "absolutely horrendous." He says the lawn was transformed into an ice skating rink and firefighters were falling in the slick conditions.
