Fire Island Lighthouse repairs get underway
A project to repair damage to the Fire Island Lighthouse caused during Superstorm Sandy got underway Monday.
Jim Dunphy, of the National Park Service, says that when Sandy swept over the barrier island in 2012, the power of the waves damaged the southwest corner of the lighthouse's terrace.
The $1 million-plus project is not only about stabilizing that corner, but it's also about preservation as each stone will be removed and numbered. When the job is done, each stone will be placed back into its original spot from 1858.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of June, just in time for the Fourth of July weekend.
