Thanks for tuning into News 12 the Bronx, where local Matters. I'm Amanda Bossard, and we begin with breaking news tonight. An investigation is underway into what caused this massive fire in Kingsbridge. It happened at around 6 p.m. and quickly escalated to a major response. Newswell's Heather Fordham has been there. She joins us now with the latest details. Heather, what are you learning on scene? Amanda, the FDNY says the weather played a big role in their efforts to put out this fire here on Heath Avenue tonight. The wind only adding fuel to those flames as they spread across the top floor. This as residents stood across the street and watched in disbelief. Thick dark smoke clouded the night sky in Kingsbridge as firefighters navigated a relentless fire on the rooftop of 3030 Heath Avenue. This is really devastating to me. This is just a lot. I don't have my family, you know this is a lot for me. People watched in panic as firefighters smashed through rooms on the 5th floor. Oh my God, please don't break into my house. Knock door. A ring doorbell camera captured the halls as they searched for pockets of fire. It was a. Typical night until about 6 p.m. when people started to smell smoke. Within 4 minutes, the FDNY was knocking at their doors. They say the source of the flames came from the top floor up through the roof. The weather posing a challenge to their 180 person effort. Whenever it's windy, the fire travels with the wind, and the wind had a major impact. Two firefighters were hurt but are expected to recover. People made it out on their own safely with nothing but the clothes on their back. I have my cat as long as I have my cat, I'm good. That's it. I mean, I just hope my next door neighbor made it out and everybody else made it out. That's the only thing I care about. Sanitation trucks are out here salting the roads to clean up that icy mess that was left behind from that water used to put out this fire. This says people who live in the building are warming up on an MTA bus across the street. The American Red Cross is now assisting dozens of those residents with emergency housing as they look for a place to stay tonight. Reporting in Kingsbridge, Heather Fordham, News 12, the Bronx.
