The family of a Smithtown man beaten to death outside a strip club is asking for justice after two of the men convicted of the crime were sentenced Wednesday.
Police say 23-year-old Louis McGrath got in a fight with 24-year-old Curtis Williams, of Brentwood, outside a Commack strip club on April 22, 2005. According to prosecutors, 28-year-old Joseph Smith and 29-year-old LaShone White jumped in and continued beating McGrath when he was unconscious on the ground.
All three men were found guilty of second-degree assault rather than manslaughter or murder. White, who a judge deemed most responsible for McGrath?s death, received seven years in prison. Williams was sentenced to three years in prison. Smith was previously sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation. Smith and Williams received reduced sentences after both testified against White. The victim?s family says all three men got off too easy.
