Families across Nassau and Suffolk counties gathered Tuesday evening to meet local officers, build relationships and strengthen trust during National Night Out.

Instead of responding to emergencies, police officers spent the evening playing games and talking with families across Long Island.

The annual event is designed to bring law enforcement and the communities they serve together in a relaxed setting, giving residents a chance to interact with officers outside of emergency situations.

"I think it's important for our children to understand that the police are here to help the community," said Huntington resident Jessica Blass. "Somebody that you go to for not only an emergency but also services."

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said those personal interactions can make a lasting difference.

"It's a great opportunity for the community, especially the young people, to see police in a different way," Catalina said. "To talk with them, play a game with them, have a sandwich or ice cream with them and really get to know them on a personal level."

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the goal is to build relationships before residents ever need to call 911.

"People sometimes only see a cop when there is something bad happening in their life," Ryder said. "We want them to know that we are there for everything. But there are times when you might see an officer in the park, stop and say hello."

Those simple conversations can leave a lasting impression, especially on children.

"The police keep us safe," said Levittown resident Valentina Peranzo. "They came to my camp and brought a dog who helps in a bad situation. They are very important."

For one night, the focus shifted away from crime and emergencies and toward building trust, making connections and reminding communities that a positive relationship with police can begin with something as simple as saying hello.
