Experts are warning that the war on opioid drugs appears to be fueling a comeback of crack-cocaine and other substances.
Police say overall heroin fatalities are dropping locally, statewide and nationally, but they say other options are being peddled by drug dealers.
“We're starting to see crack-cocaine make a come back. This is a business. Heroin is a business. When the product gets dirty…dealers go back to a different product to start pushing again,” says Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, of the Family and Children's Association, says the focus needs to be on addiction itself.
"We've got to stop chasing the drug du jour and really focus on the addictive disorder that drives drug use of all kinds. Whether it's heroin, alcohol, pot, crack, it doesn't matter," he says. "So I think what we're seeing now is a broadening of the message."
Police and drug counselors say that message involves counseling, treatment, enforcement and education.
Nassau police give monthly updates on heroin arrests and overdoses in communities across the county. They say there have been 41 overdoses in Wantagh over the past year. Four of them were fatal.
