Experts say there has been a striking increase in blue green algae blooms in Long Island's lakes and ponds this year.
Doctor Chris Gobler, a Stony Brook University professor and expert in toxic algae blooms, says this year is the worst yet.
"There [are] now 12 lakes and ponds that have listed blue green algae in 2016. Last year at this time, there were only five," says Gobler.
Blue green algae can be poisonous to animals and can make humans sick.
Gobler says the algae blooms are directly related to antiquated septic systems, fertilizer run-off, and run-off from surrounding roads.
