The former highway superintendent for the Town of Smithtown admitted in court Tuesday he misused campaign donations.
Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Ward said Edmund Lynch illegally spent $6,000 of campaign contributions. Lynch purchased season tickets to the New York Giants for three seasons, a laptop computer for his daughter and other goods, Ward said.
Ray Perini, Lynch's attorney, said his client acted responsibly as highway superintendent, but admitted fault in falling victim to confusing campaign finance laws.
Lynch is required to pay full restitution, but will not serve any prison time. Despite the lack of time behind bars, Lynch now has a felony conviction on his record.
The investigation into Lynch's activities is part of a broader probe into the behavior of Smithtown officials, Ward said. The assistant district attorney declined to name who else is under investigation.
