An appellate court denied Mangano's request to remain free on bail as he appeals his conviction.
Mangano is in the custody of the Bureau of Prisons in Devens, Massachusetts.
He is set to serve 12 years in prison in the facility just outside Boston.
Mangano and his wife, Linda Mangano, were found guilty of accepting bribes from an Oyster Bay businessman and lying to the FBI to cover it up.
Linda Mangano has also begun serving her 15-month sentence.
