Save the Sound, an environmental group, has launched a water quality study at Long Island's bays and harbors in an effort to gauge the overall health of the Long Island Sound.
There are more than 100 harbors in the Long Island Sound, which includes Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester and Connecticut. Each of the harbors will have their water tested.
Tracey Brown, of Save the Sound, says the water in the harbors is unique to the open waters of the Sound.
"The bays and harbors are definitely more vulnerable to pollution because they're getting it directly from the land and it's not getting flushed out. When you're out in the open Sound and pollution flows in, you have dilution from the tides and it helps," says Brown.
The aim is to have testing done twice a month in every single harbor and bay connected to Long Island Sound.
The Unified Water Study is being paid for by private donations and they are looking for more volunteers.
