Long Islanders may have to pay more the next time they buy a bottle of water, juice or sports drinks.Friday marks 25 years since the state passed its bottle bill. The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is urging lawmakers to support what's being called the "Bigger Better Bottle Bill."Under the bill, consumers buying non-carbonated beverages such as water, juices and sports drinks will be required to pay a nickel deposit. Supporters of the bill say it will increase recycling and make communities cleaner. They also want beverage distributors to give any unclaimed deposits from bottles to the state Environmental Protection Fund. Opponents of the bill say it is too costly and consumers will only wind up spending more money if it's passed.
