There's a major rift brewing between environmentalists and the Long Island Shooting Range of Brookhaven.Residents and environmentalists have been trying to get the range, which is located in Ridge, to close down for years. Neighbors say oftentimes it sounds like guns are going off in their backyards. Environmentalists add that about three years ago the owner of the range broke the law by destroying nine acres of protected Pine Barrens when he expanded the facility. Dick Amper, of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, says he is hoping New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer will get involved in protecting the land, since the town of Brookhaven has not. The range is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and News 12 Long Island is trying to reach the owner for comment.
