The concrete end of the Piermont pier closed last week after village officials got an email from Blue Shore Engineering stating there are "numerous areas at imminent risk of failure."
"We were quite surprised," said Mayor Bruce Tucker after they got the notice. He says that now closed section was built in the 1950's. "We knew that there was going to be deterioration over time. We thought we could get a few more years out of it."
According to the village's Facebook post alerting the public of the closure, The engineering firm said the pier was still "viable" and to check back in five to eight years. While it looks OK at it's surface now, images and other data taken by the local fire department to send to the firm, show cracks and more underneath. According to the firm's recent email, the pier could collapse if a log or ice sheet hit one of the damaged piles.
Our News 12's Diane Caruso spoke with people walking and driving there who were unfazed about the closure because they're still able to use the rest of the mile long pier.
The village is still working to figure out how long it will be closed and how much it will cost to fix. Adding they are seeking the possibility of grant money.
