Wantagh BOE to appeal court decision in attempt to keep ‘Warrior’ name

The New York State Education Department enacted a rule in 2023 to ban the use of Indigenous mascots, which includes the Warrior moniker.

The Wantagh Board of Education says it will appeal a previous court decision in an attempt to keep its current “Warrior” name.

The district initially filed a lawsuit in federal court on Sept. 29, 2023 to keep its mascot. A federal judge dismissed the case on March 27, 2025.

The BOE announced Friday that it will be filing an appeal with the Second Circuit Court on Monday.

The New York State Education Department enacted a rule in 2023 to ban the use of Indigenous mascots, which includes the Warrior moniker.
