A study found that 15 of the 20 highest paid county and municipal employees in New York are from Long Island.

The Empire Center for Public Policy study covers one year, from April 1, 2012 to March, 21, 2013. It does not include pension costs, health insurance or any fringe benefits.

According to the study, retired Suffolk Community College Executive Vice President George Gatta Jr. was the highest paid county employee statewide, collecting nearly $360,000 before retiring in February.

The study found that Amityville Village pays its police and fire departments more than any other village in the state, with 23 employees averaging a salary of nearly $176,000. Old Brookville, Kensington, Old Westbury and Lloyd Harbor also made the top five.

The Empire Center for Public Policy found that 12 of the top 20 highest paid county employees in the state are Nassau County police and fire department employees, earning between $259,000 and $307,000.

A spokesperson for Nassau Executive Ed Mangano says overtime demands created by Superstorm Sandy skewed the statistics a bit for county police officers.
