It was a heartwarming moment at Wednesday’s Elmont Memorial High School football practice.

Principal Kevin Dougherty was surrounded by players, and an outpouring of love, as he told his students that he would be returning to his job on Oct. 11.

Dougherty, known affectionately as "Doc," was removed from his position unexpectedly.

While the community has welcomed his reinstatement, which was announced in an e-mail Wednesday, many are still looking for answers as to why he was ever removed.

"We're happy for his return, with something that never should have happened in the first place," said parent Kenny Lewis.
