Electric bills on Long Island may be going up starting next year.
A state commission is recommending that the LIPA board allow PSEG to raise electric rates a total of 5 percent over three years.
Trustee Suzette Smookler says under state law, the LIPA board doesn't have the power to reject the rate hikes recommended by the state.
She says all trustees can do is vote to hold more hearings on the rate hike issue, and they can only do that if they feel the rate hikes would violate a narrowly written set of guidelines.
The board decided not to challenge the rate increases.
PSEG had been seeking a slightly higher rate increase, saying it needs the money for things such as tree trimming.
The final vote on the rate hike will come in December.
